The raindrops were falling from the sky with icy force, simulating tears in the red-haired's cheeks who was waiting, patient, the return of her loved ones. She thought, ironically, of the soldiers who went to the war leaving behind their wifes, their family and their friends.
Kairi smiled, sadly. She will be the eternal wife, always waiting.

"Kairi, you'll fall ill if you stay here" Selphie said, worried. Her friend did not answer "Come on, you must rest a little. Let's go home. We'll come back tomorrow."

Kairi ducked. She and her parents has discussed two days ago, because of Kairi's disappearance months ago, when Axel tried to kidnap her and she ran into the Realm of Darkness. After Sora and Riku's departure, she started to being sullen with everyone, and she escape from her house when her father shouted her.

"Alright, as you wish" the younger one sighed, giving an umbrella to Kairi "Take it. You will need it more than me.
"...Thanks."
"But you have to promise me you'll not stay here all the night, okay?"
"Ok. I promise" Kairi rolled her eyes.
"Cool" Selphie laughed, cheerful as always "Send me a message when you'll arrive to your home!" And she ran away, under the rain.

Under the sound of the falling rain, Kairi stopped looking at the girl and turned slowly to the sea, staring it with empty eyes. The ocean. Where she wake up in the islands for the first time. Where she saw her friends coming home just a few days ago.

"They will come back" she said to herself "They must come back, as Sora promised me. And then, all will be as always"

And like if someone has heard her, the Gummi ship which Sora always boasted appeared from the nowhere in the middle of the sea and a young male got out. Kairi dropped the umbrella and ran into the water.

"Riku. You're okay" she said, embracing him tightly and trying not to mourn.
"Kairi..?" asked the silver-haired boy, surprised "What are you doing here..? Don't say" he smiled "You were waiting us"
"Where's Sora?"
"Your face is very red. You have fever..."
"Riku, don't try to hide it to me!" shouted Kairi, letting him go "Where is Sora and why aren't you with him?"

Riku stayed silent. Kairi breathed fifteen times before someone answered her. And it wasn't Riku, of course.

"Your dear Sora is gone" a man said, jumping toward them "Hi Kairi. Long time no see, huh?"
"Axel?" asked Kairi, confused "What's happening here?"
"Nope, the name's-"
"Go back inside, Axel. I have to talk with her. Leave us alone" ordered Riku, irritated.
"Please, I told you before. No Axel anymore. It's Lea, got it memorized?" said the male, with a big smile "I think you should take her back to home. The old-man will not want to see her like this"

Riku took Kairi back to the town. The girl's home wasn't too far away, but his steps were slow, giving her an opportunity to talk.

"What happened?" she finally asked.
"Sora is alright, be sure of it" Riku said quickly.
"Then, why he isn't here?"
"He is the only one who can save the worlds, remember?" Riku shooks his head "The same as always. He must start a new adventure. This time, he needs something, and I can't help him anymore"
"Don't say that. Sora always needs you. And you always needs Sora" replied Kairi.
"Not this time. I have to take you to Twilight Town. You must train with your keyblade."
"Why? There's something wrong outside?" she asked.
"I don't know"

Kairi sighed, worried.

"If we'll stay together, all will be okay. But Sora has not even come to say goodbye to me" her sky-blue eyes were filled of tears. "Why? May he doesn't trust me?"

Riku clenched his fits and subject the girl by her shoulders. In his eyes, Kairi saw a terrible pain.

"Don't you understand? If Sora had come here to say goodbye, he couldn't have left" he shouted "Sora loves you more than anything. He couldn't leave you behind again, as I couldn't do it too" and, suddenly, Riku kissed her right ther.
"What the..?" she tried to say when he broke the contact of his lips.
"I love you, Kairi, I love you from the first time I way you. I don't care if you love Sora, I care less. Hate me if you want, but it won't change nothing."
"Even knowing that I love another..." The tears started to rolling down her face.
"While he isn't, I'll protect you" swore him.

Kairi embraced him again, and cried for the pain she was causing to him, and the love she will never feel for her friend and her guardian.

"Will you stay with me?" asked the girl.
"I'll always be there"
